Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor has withdrawn from England's U21 squad due to injury. The 23-year-old had been selected by head coach Stuart Pearce to play in their upcoming games against Norway and France. However, Taylor hobbled out of Newcastle's 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday 20 minutes into the second half with suspected ankle ligament damage. The defender, who is having a scan to ascertain the full extent of the damage, left St James' Park on crutches and with his left foot heavily protected. Pearce has replaced Taylor with Stoke's Ryan Shawcross. The Potters defender scored Stoke's winner in their weekend win over Middlesbrough. He has already lost Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon to Fabio Capello's senior squad and Arsenal's Theo Walcott to injury.
