Newcastle defender Steven Taylor is confident the club's next manager will inherit a fit squad. With Alan Shearer still awaiting the nod to take over at St James' Park, caretaker Chris Hughton and coach Colin Calderwood have been handed the task of preparing the players for the new season, and Taylor has been impressed with the job they have done in difficult circumstances. He said: "Colin and Chris have done a fantastic job, to do what they have done and just get on with it with no hassle at all. They haven't complained and they have got us into great shape. "That's the best thing they could do. The next manager can come in, have a look at the fitness levels and he will see that the past manager has done a good job. "We have got to get ourselves into the best possible condition before kick-off time for the first game of the season. "It's going to be a difficult start for us, we know that, but we will get on with it."
