Taylor - 'Ferdinand Is Well Ahead Of Me!'

Steven Taylor says he's happy to concentrate on Newcastle United until he gets that England call.

The defender was yesterday overlooked by England coach Roy Hodgson for his squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro.

Steven Taylor: “You expect somebody like Rio Ferdinand to get in - the quality in there is unbelievable.

“I’m probably still some way off, but I’ll keep plugging away and doing well for Newcastle. That’s the most important thing.

“If I do well for Newcastle, who knows what can happen in the future?

“(Against Anzhi) I thought I was going to lose my teeth at one point!

“But I was in the right place at the right time. I got the blocks in early doors, but the main thing is they didn’t score – so it was worth it.

“Everybody was talking about Samuel Eto’o before the game, and you know that you’re playing against one of the best strikers of all time really.

“His record speaks for itself. There was a lot of pressure on me before the game.

“I’m just glad that we put in a great performance as a team – we defended so well.

"In the first half, we got the runaround a bit, but in the second half, we put them under so much pressure they couldn’t handle it.

“The lads are absolutely buzzing – we don’t fear anybody. The gaffer said we’d knocked the best team in the competition out. They have outstanding players.”
