Swansea 1 Newcastle 1: Cruel Carroll! Striker avoids red card then scores

15 February 2010 01:26
After a week when Andy Carroll became the latest footballer to hit the headlines for the wrong reasons, you'd expect the Newcastle striker to be keen on keeping out of the spotlight. But it was the giant forward who found himself the talking point again here as late Geordie joy was contrasted with Welsh anger. [LNB]Just days after Carroll was charged with assault following a nightclub fracas, he sent Newcastle back to the Championship summit by salvaging a late point they scarcely deserved. [LNB]But the England Under-21 frontman was fortunate he was still on the pitch to do so after appearing to strike Swansea's Garry Monk with his elbow only moments earlier. [LNB] Controversial finish: Carroll (right) headed in an undeserved late equaliser[LNB]Newcastle boss Chris Hughton said: 'I thought it was only a yellow card. I was pleased the referee felt the same. [LNB]'With what's gone on, we've seen no change in Andy this week. I washappy he was ready to play here. 'He's too big to put his arm aroundbut, of course, you speak to him about where his game can improve. [LNB]'He doesn't have fear in his game and just wants to play. Andy isstill young and is still developing, but he's adding goals to his gamenow.' [LNB]Before Carroll's impact, Newcastle appeared to be heading forback-to-back defeats after David Cotterill had curled Swansea into a56th-minute lead. [LNB]The visitors weren't at the races and after raising his arm in an81st-minute aerial challenge with Monk, Carroll appeared to be headingfor an early bath before referee Andy Woolmer decided to show yellowinstead. Carroll took advantage of his fortune, meeting substitute LeonBest's cross at the far post for his seventh goal of the season withthree minutes remaining. [LNB]Furious Swansea boss Paulo Sousa later insisted Carroll shouldn'thave been allowed to stay on the pitch to make his crucialcontribution. [LNB]But skipper Monk, despite sporting a bloodied cauliflower earfollowing the incident, was more upset at seeing his side'swastefulness in front of goal punished at the last. [LNB]He said: 'There's no doubt he caught me and there was contact. 'ButI wasn't facing him so I don't know if he led with his elbow. I've seenplayers sent off for it. [LNB]'I'm more disappointed we didn't win this game. It feels like a lossand there's no doubt we deserved all the points. 'It was a real suckerpunch as we dominated the whole game.'[LNB] Swansea 1 Newcastle 1: Carroll's late leveller sends Magpies back to the topDerby 3 Newcastle 0: Kris Commons' touch puts Rams in dreamlandCarroll charged with assault after incident in Newcastle nightclub[LNB] [LNB]
