Stevenage 3 Newcastle 1: There can't have been a Winn like it!

10 January 2011 01:18
Can supporters please stay off the pitch, begged the stadium announcer. Rarely have words been so wasted. [LNB]Hundreds of Stevenage fans flooded the field at the Lamex Stadium as the final whistle blew - and why not? The youngest club in the Football League - just 25 years old - had dumped out one of the oldest and absolutely deserved to. [LNB] Unlikely hero: Peter Winn celebrates after Stevenage's famous victory[LNB]Goals from Stacy Long, Michael Bostwick and Peter Winn saw the League Two side secure a 3-1 victory over Newcastle, a club 77 places higher than them. No fourth-tier team had ever scored as many FA Cup goals against a top-flight side. [LNB]'We didn't edge it, did we?' said Stevenage's triumphant manager Graham Westley. 'We talked beforehand about David and Goliath and we talked about the fact that David had a plan. David knew what his strengths were, he didn't play Goliath's game, he played his own game and we went out there and played our game. [LNB]'Perhaps this will give the cup an enormous boost. We've all got into the mindset of believing the Premier League is untouchable. There hasn't been a big victory of this type for a while. The magic of the cup is alive and results like this prove that.' [LNB]The cup is also about unlikely heroes with weird and wonderful stories - and Winn and Bostwick, in particular, are the perfect examples of that. Winn started out as a goalkeeper and played for Gateshead last season while Bostwick thinks he has his facial hair to thank for his well-taken goal.[LNB] Out of Toon: Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew watches his team crash out[LNB] 'I started at Scunthorpe at 12, as a goalkeeper,' said 22-year-old Winn, who thought the ill-tempered tie between the sides in 1998 played to their advantage. [LNB]'Then, at 16, I was released but they got a new youth team coach and he called everyone back who had been released. He told me he wanted me to try as an outfield player because I had got a bit of pace and, as they say, the rest is history. We have played them off the park. [LNB]'I think because we are a League Two team and because they are a new Newcastle team who don't know about our history with them - and a lot of our players do - they didn't understand what it would mean to us. We showed we had greater determination than them.' [LNB]Bostwick said: 'I've never had a full set of whiskers as bushy as this before, but ever since I started growing this beard I've done well, so I won't be visiting the razor any time soon.' [LNB]For a dreadful Newcastle side who had Cheik Tiote sent off for a dangerous tackle, Joey Barton's goal was of scant consolation. The day was all about Stevenage. [LNB]'It was the Ashes on Friday and the Boro on Saturday,' boomed the stadium announcer. Now they'll fancy their next test at home to Reading.[LNB] Punched player in defiant moodStevenage defender Scott Laird says he will not let getting punched in the face by one of his own fans ruin the excitement of dumping Newcastle out of the FA Cup. [LNB] The police and club are hunting for the man who hit Laird (above) as fans invaded the pitch after Saturday's 3-1 win. But Laird is refusing to let the incident taint his joy. [LNB]'It was a fantastic day for everyone at Stevenage and I don't want to let the incident take the gloss away from that. I'm ok and just looking ahead to our next League game,' he said. [LNB]A man claiming to be the attacker's father contacted the Daily Mail on Sunday to say his son would issue an apology to Laird, the football club and the people of Stevenage today. [LNB]Declining to be named, the caller also said his son would attend a police station accompanied by a solicitor. He added that, while his son 'had been stupid', the incident 'had been blown out of all proportion'.
