Smith To Stand Firm And Snub Leeds

The Sun newspaper is a little behind the times with their "exclusive" yesterday saying Alan Smith's hopes of a dream return to Leeds have been handed a huge boost by Newcastle. We covered that story TWO WEEKS ago. Smith, 30, has a year left on his Toon deal and old club Leeds cannot afford to pay him anywhere near his £60,000-a-week salary. But The Sun report that the Magpies are willing to put £30,000 a week towards his Elland Road wage next term, with Leeds stumping up a further £15,000 to coax Smith back to his hometown team. Newcastle's proposal means Smith would be dropping £15,000 a week to finish his career where it all began 14 years ago. But we can tell you the deal was offered to the player weeks ago and he is going NOWHERE for a drop in wages. Apparently he would rather not be involved for £60,000 a week ... rather than play for his hometown club on a regular basis for £45,000 per week. That's pride and passion for yer!
