The former England and Newcastle manager died last week following a long battle with cancer. A statement released by his family said: "Sir Bobby Robson was laid to rest today at a private family service. "Lady Robson has been overwhelmed by the wonderful tributes and messages of condolence and is very grateful that the family's privacy has been respected at this sad time. "Arrangements for the thanksgiving service in celebration of Sir Bobby's life will be announced in due course." A family spokeswoman said the service, which was held in the North East, was attended by Robson's widow, Elsie, and the couple's three sons, Andrew, Paul and Mark, as well as other relatives and close friends. Robson died last Friday at his County Durham home surrounded by his family, aged 76. England's second most successful manager of all time had been in failing health since being diagnosed with cancer for a fifth time two years ago. Since then he had used his rare blend of fame and immense popularity to raise more than £1.6 million for research into early cancer diagnosis. Robson appeared at an England v Germany match at St James' Park, the home of Newcastle United, on July 26 in front of 33,000 people in aid of his cancer charity. St James' Park has been turned into a shrine, with thousands of fans visiting the stadium to leave tributes and pay their respects. There have been calls to name a stand at the stadium after Robson, who also managed Ipswich, Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven and Porto.
