Sir Bobby Robson 1933-2009: The tributes for a true legend

Peter ReidBobby gave me my first cap at the age of 29 and then I got my chance at the 1986 World Cup. [LNB]There was a lot of pressure on us at the time and Bobby just said to me: 'Get the ball, give it to Glenn Hoddle and drink plenty of water!' That was it. [LNB]But as you get older you realise it was a touch of psychology. He was a wily old fox.[LNB] Glenn HoddleHe's the closest we've come to winning the World Cup (since 1966) - that's how good Bobby was. [LNB]In the 1990 World Cup with a bit more luck in the penalty shootout, who knows? [LNB]He was right up there behind Sir Alf Ramsey. [LNB]He was a football man, very endearing and quite comical. You can see how respected he was.[LNB] George BurleyNot only did he manage my career from the age of 15 when I signed for him at Ipswich, he also had a huge influence on my life. [LNB]I have always considered him to be a second father. [LNB]Quite simply, his record in the game was phenomenal. Football has lost a legend and I have lost the man to whom I owe my career.[LNB] Steve McClarenI am in shock. I was with him in his home having a cup of tea two months ago. He was fighting then, just like he always did. [LNB]Great players around the world adored him and loved working with him, players like Romario and Patrick Kluivert. [LNB]To do what he did but still have the respect of the players is incredible.[LNB] Fabio CapelloSir Bobby was a wonderful man, a real gentleman. [LNB]To manage the national team (England) for so long was a remarkable achievement, and we all remember how close he came to leading England to the World Cup final in Italy. [LNB]He was a fantastic man, and loved by so many people. His spirit and courage were incredible.[LNB] Steve HarperBefore training we had a minute's silence and our coach at Newcastle, Chris Hughton, spoke very well about Sir Bobby. It has been a very sombre day. [LNB]It is important we came to pay our respects. It has been a privilege to have met him and to have got to know him. [LNB]Having him around, everyone loved him and rightly so.[LNB] Kieron DyerHe was a massive influence in my career, on and off pitch. [LNB]I was told five minutes before kick-off (in West Ham's friendly against Beijing in China), which was a shock. [LNB]I am going to think of all the great memories and special bits, like in team talks when he used to call me Kevin because he forgot names. [LNB]Off the pitch he treated me like a son.[LNB] Bryan RobsonBobby called me aside one day and said: 'You're the kind of guy I want as England captain. Just lead by example.' [LNB]Marvels: Robbo and Robson in 1986[LNB]I was incredibly proud and I never looked back. [LNB]We had a great relationship. It probably started because we were both from the North East, which he loved. [LNB]Then at a press conference he called me his Captain Marvel.[LNB]It was a phrase that helped my career. People associated me with being this 'marvel' who could change a game. [LNB]It was an example of his great man-management. He would build you up. [LNB]He was a father figure to all of us. If we were all laughing, chatting and telling jokes he'd have a big smile because he knew wewere enjoying being a team, being together. [LNB]He'd give you little phrases to think about for the game. You'd be going over them in your mind as you kicked off.[LNB] [LNB] Great player, inspirational coach... true gentleman: Sir Bobby Robson, 1933-2009[LNB] Sir Bobby Robson: Brave player, great coach... but most of all a true gentSir Alex Ferguson on Sir Bobby Robson: There is no person I would put an inch above himSir Bobby Robson dies at the age of 76A tribute to Sir Bobby Robson: England hero, football visionary and eccentric comic geniusObituary: Farewell to a true legend and gentleman of British footballVIDEO: Sir Alex Ferguson, Italia 90 heroes... and legend in his own words A life in pictures - tribute to one of football's finest managersSir Bobby Robson: Sportsmail writers' personal memories of a Geordie legend [LNB]  Explore more:People:Steve McClaren, Glenn Hoddle, Fabio Capello, George BurleyPlaces:Italy, China, United Kingdom
