The 26-year-old defender made over 100 appearances for Newcastle in both the Championship and the Premier League, prior to his recent release, but has failed to get himself tied up with a Premier League club.
Fulham and West Ham were both said to be interested, but neither have made a move.
The Manchester United youth product has experience of the Championship, having won titles with both Sunderland and Newcastle United in 2007 and 2010 respectively.
