Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi has signed a new two-year extension to tie him to the club until 2014.

Manager Alan Pardew has been keen to secure Ameobi, who made his Magpies debut in 2000, on a longer contract for some time.

The Toon boss handed 29-year-old Ameobi the captain's armband for the recent friendly defeat at Leeds and has been impressed with the influence he has on the dressing room.

Pardew is still looking to add another forward before the transfer window closes at the end of the month and has been linked with Tottenham pair Roman Pavlyuchenko and Peter Crouch.

The Newcastle manager also had a look at PSV Eindhoven's Ola Toivonen while checking out left-back Erik Pieters.

Pieters, 22, has been lined up as a replacement for Jose Enrique as the Spanish defender edges closer to a move to Liverpool.
