Shearer will take over the reigns at St James' Park Alan Shearer will take over at Newcastle United for the final eight games of the season in a move that will stun the football world. The former Magpies striker has resisted all previous attempts to lure him into the manager's office at St James' Park. But Shearer has finally answered a desperate call from the crisis-hit club in a bid to save them from relegation, with his first match against Chelsea at St James' on Saturday. Shearer won the hearts of the Geordie nation when he rejected the opportunity to play for Manchester United and instead moved from Blackburn to Newcastle in a British record transfer of £15million in the summer of 1996. But, since retiring as player, he has rejected several opportunities to work as a coach or manager until being won over by Newcastle's current plight.
