Geordie Messiah? Shearer will take over the reigns at St James' Park Alan Shearer has sensationally agreed to manage Newcastle for the remaining eight games of the season. The struggling Magpies, who are battling to avoid relegation, will confirm Shearer's appointment later today. The former Toon striker has resisted all previous attempts to lure him into the manager's office at St James' Park. But Shearer has finally answered a desperate call from the crisis-hit club in a bid to save them from relegation, with his first match against Chelsea at St James' on Saturday. Sportsmail understands that Iain Dowie, the former QPR, Charlton, Crystal Palace and Coventry boss, will join Shearer's rescue mission with a position on the Newcastle coaching staff. Former Newcastle physiotherapist Paul Ferris will also join the Shearer revolution. Shearer won the hearts of the Geordie nation when he rejected the opportunity to play for Manchester United and instead moved from Blackburn to Newcastle in a British record transfer of £15million in the summer of 1996. But, since retiring as player, he has rejected several opportunities to work as a coach or manager until being won over by Newcastle's current plight. He scored a record number of goals for the club before opting for a career in the media, rejecting the advances of former chairman Freddy Shepherd as well as the current hierarchy. On his return to the club Kevin Keegan asked him to join the coaching staff but Shearer declined. He also rejected the offer of joining Steve McClaren's England staff in 2006. But with Joe Kinnear recovering from triple heart bypass surgery andChris Hughton struggling in his absence, Newcastle have dropped intothe bottom three and look increasingly incapable of escaping.
