Shearer Statue - Report Was Wrong

16 November 2011 11:53
David Punton of Nexus has asked NU-Mad to put Newcastle fans in the picture about the Shearer statue we reported on yesterday.

David Punton: Is there any chance you can put something on the site just to clarify the inaccurate media reports (Chron) from yesterday which stated that Nexus and Newcastle City Council were in talks over a Shearer statue in time for the Olympic football at St James Park next summer.

The news article was untrue in that Nexus has not had any talks with the City Council over any such project to erect a statue of Alan Shearer, let along on land around the Metro station.

The land around St James Metro station is on a long lease so Nexus can't get involved in any such scheme no matter how much supporters might like to see one. (And between you and I we're not sure that would be the best location).

Any chance of some clarification on your site, it might help to nip this in the bud. The Chron have offered a correction and we are waiting to see if the council want to take it up.

Here's our statement:

A Nexus spokesman said: "While Nexus are the freehold owners of some land around St James Metro station, the area is subject to a long lease which was granted in 1998 and that means we couldn't take part in this project."
