Shearer plea to Owen: Stay fit, score goals and fire Newcastle to safety

Alan Shearer swept into Newcastle yesterday and gave Michael Owen the task of saving the club from relegation. 'If he is fit, then he will start,' said Shearer of his former England team-mate, who was dropped for the last game against Arsenal by caretaker Chris Hughton. 'Terry Venables told me when I was England captain in Euro 96 and was going through a barren run that I would be in his team when the tournament started. It gave me a tremendous lift. 'Michael is fit and trained this morning very well for two hours and we hope he is fit for Saturday. Michael was one of the players I spoke to. You would expect that as he is the club captain. Michael has had his fair share of injuries but his goalscoring record is fabulous and a club in this position need goals.'
