Shearer - I want Toon job

Alan Shearer insists he still wants to manage Newcastle amid continued uncertainty surrounding the post. Shearer's assertion comes after former boss Joe Kinnear this week revealed he had been offered a two-year contract by current owner Mike Ashley, who is trying to sell the club. But Shearer has kept his hat in the ring, believing if new owners come in and buy Newcastle, he is the man to lead a promotion charge from the Championship. Shearer said: "I could be the manager if someone comes in, buys the club and wants me as manager. "If they want to get the club back up to the Premier League I'd dearly love the chance to finish what I started last season, which was very disappointing." He added: "As far as I'm aware the club's up for sale, they haven't got a buyer. "My last conversation with Mike Ashley was on the Tuesday after we'd been relegated. I told him the players I wanted to keep, the players I thought had to be moved on, and the players I wanted to bring in. "He said he wasn't going to put any more money into the club, and that is it as far as I'm aware." Shearer took over temporary charge at St James' Park towards the end of last season but was unable to stop Newcastle's relegation from the top flight. His appointment came after health problems forced Kinnear to stand down as manager of the crisis-hit club. But Kinnear insisted on Wednesday he has now been offered a new two-year contract, although he will not be able to start work until October because he is still recuperating from heart surgery. But whoever is manager next term, Shearer believes the club must sign players quickly after losing the likes of Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins over the summer transfer period. Shearer added: "Newcastle's squad was thin last season, and when you consider the players who have gone out, that tells a story. "They need players quickly and it could be a long, hard season if that doesn't happen."
