Today we read Shearer believes that Andy Carroll has shown what he is capable of at Liverpool this season, and the £35m transfer fee is looking more realistic.
Carroll moved to Merseyside from Newcastle at almost literally the last minute of the 2011 January transfer window.
He cost a British record breaking fee of £35m, and was expected to bring big things to Liverpool, but his performances up until the end of last season have been lacklustre, and the Reds have had some of the worst conversion rates in the Premier League.
Shearer: "He has finished the season well.
"The Andy Carroll that I saw coming on against Chelsea in the FA Cup final was the Andy Carroll I have seen week in and week out at Newcastle.
"He was bullying defenders, scoring goals, running the channels. The ability is there.
"He can be a success at Euro 2012, no doubt.
"Age is on his side. He absolutely has time. He's a good lad, Andy."
But ... only last month Shearer said in 442 said Carroll was not good enough for Euro 2012.
The problem is - how do you fill a Rooney-shaped hole?
Alan Shearer: "England should flood the midfield with a 4-5-1 formation, giving width for the front man.
"Who should we play instead of Wayne Rooney? It's really really difficult to say.
"Danny Welbeck has done OK but he is in and out of the Manchester United team, while Peter Crouch has a great record ... but he hasn't been part of the England set-up for a while.
"But those are the two I would go with."
