Shearer demands goals from Owen as Newcastle set their sights on survival

Alan Shearer has told Michael Owen to fire Newcastle to safety. The Newcastle boss was officially unveiled today and wasted no time in setting his sights on dragging them out of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone. Shearer inherits a side that are two points off safety with just eight games to go. And star striker Owen, who has been snubbed by England for the past year, has been pinpointed as the man to save their skin. 'All I want to see Michael do is put the ball in the back of the net,' said the Toon legend. 'He's done that all of his life. I've spoken to him already and I've asked him if I can have a few more in the eight remaining games!' Shearer exploded back into life when Sir Bobby Robson took over at Newcastle 10 years ago and now he wants the same from Owen. 'I'm sure people will make comparisons with that, but Michael is a different character to what I am and is a different player,' said Shearer. 'But he's in this squad and it's his job, my job and everyone's job to make sure we're not in that bottom three come the end of the season. There are some very, very good players here at this football club. But, for whatever reason, they haven't really shown that.
