Shawky claims Magpies interest

Middlesbrough midfielder Mohamed Shawky has revealed that Newcastle have been keeping tabs on his progress. The Egyptian, who joined Boro in the summer of 2007, recently expressed a desire to move on after falling out of favour at The Riverside. He has had few opportunities to impress this season and it seems unlikely he will play a major part in the run-in as the club battles against relegation. Shawky claims that North East rivals Newcastle have been monitoring him in international action. He admits he would be tempted to head to St James' Park, describing such a switch as a 'step forward'. "A Newcastle representative was present in Cairo to watch me in action during Egypt's World Cup qualifier with Zambia," Shawky told Al-Hayat TV. "They were also monitoring Ahmed Al-Muhammadi. "Joining Newcastle would be a step forward. They are a vey good team and have a large fanbase in England." Al-Muhammadi is a highly-rated right-sided player who has previously been linked with Blackburn.
