Rodgers And Pardew Stabbed In The Back?

10 September 2012 21:06
The transfer window is closed, the dust has settled but for Newcastle fans the sense of disappointment felt towards the series of events still hasn't faded.

Alan Pardew was linked with two star defenders from May to the end of August - Douglas and Mathieu Debuchy - and he made a personal plea to Mike Ashley on the final day of the window to sign them both.

Some suggest an extra £500,00 each would have swung the deals, but Ashley kept his money in his pocket.

Pardew was gutted, BUT he had the satisfaction of keeping his star players ... although it was luck rather than any heroics from Ashley .., because no club put any bids on the table.

Pardew since admitted the club was working on a shoe-string because Ashley will not sanction any major deals.

Alan Pardew: "We have a long-term plan in place at Newcastle which means that we don't spend what we don't have.

"We can't match what Chelsea and the others outlay on players but if we can keep those top players and sign and bring through good youngsters, we will be in a good place.

"Investment does not always guarantee you are going to improve the team. We have seen that down the years."

However ... over at Anfield, similar incidents were happening, and some suggest Brendan Rodgers was stabbed in the back.

Rodgers only allowed Andy Carroll to leave because he believed beyond doubt that he would be replaced.

Sources close to the club have even indicated that Rodgers himself played an active role in persuading Carroll to leave, assuring him that it was by far the best option for his career.

With just a week to go to the close of the window, Rodgers had gone public to say that he was happy to keep the existing three strikers - Luis Suarez, Fabio Borini, and Andy Carroll - until January, unless there were ‘other solutions’.

Rodgers has directly stated that, had he known that no deals would be done on the Friday, he would not have sanctioned Carroll’s exit.

But in many ways "what goes around - comes around" - Liverpool knicked Carroll from us in the last hour of the transfer window last year - leaving us with no cover.

Isn't it nice when the shoe is on the other foot!

NEWCASTLE UNITED REVIEW 2011/12

Newcastle United fans have seen their team come a long way since earning promotion back to the Premier League in 2010 and nobody could have predicted the exciting season that lay ahead at the start of the 2011/12 campaign.

This was a season of rejuvenation as changes were made both on and off the pitch with fresh talent drafted in, in the form of Cissé, Cabaye, Ba and Obertan to name a few, and manager Alan Pardew delivering a brand of attacking football that earned him both the Barclays and LMA Manager of the Season awards.

With the new signings settling in well, and with a good core of players already at the club, Newcastle United undertook an incredible journey that saw them return to the upper echelons of the Premier League and secure a place in Europe the following season, only narrowly missing out on a Champions League place.

There was plenty to cheer this season as stalwarts of the team Fabricio Coloccini, Cheick Tiote and Jonas Gutierrez all solidified their reputations at the heart of the club and Tim Krul and Hatem Ben Arfa both delivered impressive displays.

Relive this exhilarating season in full with highlights of every game and every goal from the campaign including victories over Sunderland, Liverpool, Chelsea and a dominating demolition of 2010/11 champions Manchester United.
