Pardew's First Trophy

The trophy looked like a 1970s television antennae, the local population snubbed it on cost grounds and the rules required a Phd in mathematics to untangle. But ...

It's a trophy!

But for all the quirky eccentricities of the 12th annual Guadiana Trophy, Newcastle United will quite happily settle for a winning start to their Continental endeavours this season.

Their tournament victory was Taylor-made in the end - Ryan’s exquisite free-kick earning all three points after Steven’s comeback goal gave them a share of the points against Olympiakos in the first game on Friday.

And for Newcastle supporters licking their lips in anticipation at European football again this season, the sight of a United player lifting a trophy on foreign lands is nothing to be scoffed at.
