Alan Pardew is over the moon to win the Trofeu Internacional Futebol do Guadiana in the Algarve, and he says Newcastle are ready for the opening game of the Premiership.

Alan Pardew: “You always want to win trophies. I thought it was a really good game.

“Braga were the best team we have played and we were near our best.

“We had a strong side out and that was important because we wanted to win it and we have.

“It is nice to have a trophy in the dressing room.

“Hopefully, we will have another one at the end of the year, that would be nice.

“It was a physical encounter.

“They really wanted to win it – like we did. They put a really strong team out, they are in the Champions League in two weeks.

“So they are not far away and nor or we.

“I feel we are ready to start the season.

“We know we have to hit the ground running.

“It has been the best possible start. To win a trophy, get an honourable draw against Olympiacos and then beat Braga – one of the best teams in Portugal last year – is a good start for us.”
