The Chronicle: "De Jong was a target for Newcastle 18 months ago, but the Dutch international ended up signing for Borussia Monchengladbach in a £12.6m deal.
"But he has fallen out of favour at the German side, and has been left kicking his heels on the sidelines this term.
"Monchengladbach are now considering whether to let the 23-year-old leave on loan in January, which has alerted Newcastle who have drawn up a hitlist as they look to bolster their attacking options in the transfer window with an over-reliance on Loic Remy for goals
"The Magpies are also mulling over a fresh bid for Bafetimbi Gomis, having failed to sign the forward in August after protracted negotiations with the Frenchman, his agents and Lyon broke down.
"But he is out of contract in the summer, and could be available for just a couple of million euros in the New Year.
"De Jong, meanwhile, still has three years left on his deal, but Monchengladbach director Hans Meyer admitted they would consider letting the player leave in January."
