Pardew Tips Liverpool To Finish Ahead Of Toon!

10 March 2012 16:38
Alan Pardew tips Liverpool to finish ahead of Newcastle in the Premiership.

Alan Pardew: "If you look at Liverpool's run-in, it's definitely favourable to ours, and their squad is bigger, so I still think they are in the box seat for that position.

"I would be very disappointed if we finished below eighth, for sure. Top eight, seventh, sixth...

"Sixth is Europe and there's a great chance of that, and we want to try to take it.

"We have got ourselves into a great position.

"A lot of clubs can't go for Europe - probably only seven clubs are going to make it now. There's an outside chance of an eighth club getting involved, but I doubt it.

"Liverpool are already in it [they qualified for the Europa League by dint of their Carling Cup triumph], so if with five [games] to go they can't make the Champions League, their focus could slip.

"Kenny [Dalglish, Liverpool manager] might take the option of playing a few young players, which might open the door for us, so there's lots to happen yet."

Andy Carroll made headlines for the right reasons as his goal gave Newcastle a shock 1-0 win over title-chasing Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.

The England Under-21 striker, tipped to feature in the senior squad for the friendly with France later this month, had started the day on the front pages following allegations about his private life.

However, under the close eye of watching England boss Fabio Capello, the Newcastle number nine headed in what proved to be the winner at the end of the first half.

Although Arsenal twice hit the woodwork through Cesc Fabregas' deflected free-kick and Theo Walcott, the Gunners were well below par and their miserable afternoon was compounded by the dismissal of centre-back Laurent Koscielny in stoppage time for a professional foul.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had also found his personal life under the media spotlight ahead of this fixture.

Nevertheless, the French coach will have expected nothing but 100% focus from his team, whom he felt were complacent when throwing away an early lead in their midweek European tie.

After an initial spell of pressure from Newcastle, Arsenal slowly built momentum.

Walcott chased a long pass upfield which was smothered by keeper Tim Krul, before Marouane Chamakh just failed to collect Alex Song's pass at the edge of a crowded penalty area.

Newcastle had been thumped 4-0 by Arsenal in the Carling Cup clash at St James' Park a fortnight ago, but went into this game buoyed by their thrashing of local rivals Sunderland.

Arsenal - looking to keep the pressure on leaders Chelsea - almost took the lead on 11 minutes when Fabregas' deflected 22-yard free-kick crashed against the crossbar after ricocheting off the wall.

The Gunners captain was then played into the right side of the penalty area, but was quickly crowded out before Walcott's chip across the six-yard box was headed behind.

Arsenal, though, were left frustrated as Newcastle broke up play well, and were awarded a few free-kicks which were delivered direct into the penalty area.

The atmosphere went a bit flat as half-time approached, with Arsenal not really able to get near their usual fluidity.

When Fabregas was slipped in down the right by Samir Nasri, his shot at the near post was blocked into the sidenetting as the home fans continued to grow restless.

The Emirates Stadium, though, almost erupted when Nasri's drive appeared to be heading for the top corner - only for Krul to pull-off a fine one-handed save.

Newcastle took a shock lead on the stroke of half-time when a deep free-kick into the Arsenal box from Joey Barton was met by Carroll, who got there ahead of Lukasz Fabianski to nod the visitors in front.

At the start of the second half, Arsenal hit the woodwork again when Walcott darted into the right side of the area from Jack Wilshere's pass and lashed in an angled drive, which crashed against the underside of the bar with Krul beaten.

Arsenal continued to press, with Song cutting the ball back across the six-yard box, but Chamakh was unable to connect.

With 35 minutes left, Wenger made a change when he sent on Andrey Arshavin to replace Nasri and then introduced Robin van Persie for the Dutchman's first appearance since the end of August after an ankle injury.

Van Persie's first touch was a lovely backheel down the left, with Gael Clichy then delivering a low cross which was just too far ahead of Arshavin.

Newcastle, though, continued to show little regard for reputation as they looked to hold possession in a match which started to become somewhat scrappy as Wilshere was left in a heap following a challenge from Barton, but the referee took no action before defender Mike Williamson send a header wide from a corner.

Wenger's last throw of the dice came with 17 minutes left when Nicklas Bendtner replaced Wilshere.

Arshavin almost weaved his way clear, but Fabricio Coloccini made a saving tackle in the six-yard box.

Arsenal had pace in abundance up front now, but Newcastle continued to hold their ground.

Fabregas' diving header was straight at the keeper following Arshavin's run as Wenger looked to the heavens.

Arsenal threw long balls forwards, but Newcastle were not to be denied a shock victory as the hosts finished with 10 men after centre-half Koscielny was shown a straight red card for hauling down substitute Nile Ranger.

 Emirates Stadium - ARSENAL

How To Get There By Car & Where To Park

Leave the M1 at Junction 2 and onto the A1, following the signs for City (Central London). Keep going on the A1 for around six miles, until you see Holloway Road Tube Station on your right. Take the next left at the traffic lights into Hornsey Road and the stadium is about a 1/4 of a mile further down this road.

There is little parking at the stadium itself or in nearby streets. An extensive residents only parking scheme operates around the stadium on matchdays. It's probably better to park further out of London around a tube station such as Cockfosters and get the tube to the ground.

Tony Attwood adds; 'Cockfosters underground station is the obvious station for fans travelling from the north - it is only about 4 miles south of the M25.  It has its own car park but this can be full by as early as 12.30pm. What's more it can be difficult to exit after the game, with most drivers seeking to come out and cross the main road to head north. Unless you have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the streets around the general area of the Emirates, it really isn't worth trying to find some street parking. Football fans on matchdays are easy pickings for the traffic wardens.'

 By Train or London Underground

The nearest London Underground tube station to the Emirates Stadium is Holloway Road on the Piccadilly line. However, this is closed on matchdays as it relies mostly on lifts to transport passengers to and from street level and this could cause problems when large crowds are in attendance. Fans should therefore alight at the next stop on the Piccadilly line which is Arsenal tube station. It is only a few minutes walk from here to the stadium. On exiting the station turn right and follow Drayton Park Road around to the left. Then take one of the large bridges over the railway line to the stadium. Other tube stations in walking distance of the stadium are Finsbury Park on the Piccadilly Line and Highbury & Islington on the Victoria Line.

Otherwise you can take an overland train to Finsbury Park Railway Station from London Kings Cross. It is then about a 10 to 15 minute walk from Finsbury Park to the stadium.

Tim Sansom adds; 'After the game we had to walk a fair distance to find an underground station that had not been shut due to overcrowding. We found that the Arsenal underground had been shut by the police and so had to undertake a fairly long walk to Finsbury Park which was also shut by station staff. We were recommended by the police to take the mainline train into Kings Cross, which we did with no problems and were back in central London within 10 minutes'.

Unless you are team are being stuffed and you are leaving the game a little early, then Arsenal tube station should be fine. If though you are staying to the final whistle, then you are better off walking to Finsbury Park, rather than wait in the long queues at Arsenal tube. To get to Finsbury Park, simple walk past Arsenal tube station on your left and then take a left into St Thomas's Road. The station is at the end of the road. The Police also do a good job of controlling the flow of the numbers of fans onto the station.
