Pardew: 'I Think Colo Pulled His Foot Down'

Alan Pardew insisted there was no "malicious intent" in Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini's challenge on Luis Suarez.

Coloccini was dismissed in yesterday’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield for a reckless tackle on Suarez.

And the influential defender will be suspended for the club’s next three Premier League games against West Ham United, Swansea City and Southampton.

Pardew and his assistant John Carver went on the field to speak to referee Anthony Taylor after the final whistle.

Having seen replays of the challenge, Pardew is unlikely to appeal the decision, though he believes it was clumsy at worst.

Alan Pardew: “I’ve looked at it with Colo.

“It looks bad from one angle, but another angle I’ve seen it from – the Kop end – it looks like he’s putting his foot down.

“I don’t think there is any malicious intent there. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look good, and we might have to accept the decision.

“I wanted to ask the referee about it.

“I think it’s tough on refs at the moment, but I wanted to ask him before they got together what it was for.

“I couldn’t see the incident and needed to know. I wouldn’t have done it for anybody else but my captain.

"He could now start against Club Brugge in the Europa League on Thursday night along with midfielder Cheik Tiote, who has now served two games of his own three-match suspension.

“That will be the other option we have.

“At least it’ll keep him up to speed. We’ll review it.”
