Pardew hoping to seal deals for Toon

Newcastle will sign a left-back and a striker before the transfer window closes next Wednesday night, according to Alan Pardew. The Magpies chief is looking to secure the services of PSV Eindhoven left-back Erik Pieters as a replacement for Jose Enrique.

However, the Dutch international's agent Hakim Slimani has confirmed that no deal has been agreed as Newcastle are still around £1.5million short of PSV's £7million valuation.

Despite the slow progress, Pardew feels PSV are willing to sell but are attempting to get the maximum return for one of their prize assets. But he is very hopeful that a deal will be sealed in the coming days, while he is also certain a striker will be on board in the St James' Park squad too.

Pardew told the Journal: "I think there is a little of brinkmanship going on and I think that's understandable."If clubs are resigned to losing a player they want the best possible price so when a transfer becomes close, suddenly a lot of other clubs and the press seem to know about it. And all sorts of accusations fly around. But when you cut through it there will be a deal made, and we're hoping to do the two deals we need.

"Meanwhile, 23-year-old striker Modibo Maiga has reiterated his desire to join Newcastle after his current club Sochaux reported the Tynesiders to Fifa for alleged approaches.

He told L'Equipe: "I want it to be done with Newcastle. I want to leave - it is necessary that the president agrees to negotiate. "I met everybody, they want me and it is not any club. England is a dream. I want to go."
