Pardew: 'Goals Came At The Right Time'

05 October 2012 13:58
Alan Pardew saw his Senegal star Papiss Cisse score his first European goal for the Geordies last night against Bordeaux.

Alan Pardew: “We all worry and especially the media worry more about his confidence than he does. It’s pretty sound, his confidence.

“It was a fantastic goal, by the way. The technique to swivel and score like that was of the top level.

“What we have to be careful of is that we have got a return leg to Bordeaux and they showed in that first 30 minutes that they are a very good side.

“The second leg will worry me, I have to say, because what I saw tonight was a very good side.

“It just all fell for us tonight.

“The goals were at good times and it worked for us.

“But Papiss was part of a great team performance, you have to say that.

“People sometimes have strange memories about players.

“When we were unbeaten in the first 10 games last year, Gabriel Obertan played in most of them.

“I thought he was excellent. He had a little difficult spell, but he is 23 years old, this guy is still learning about the game.

“We played him on his wrong side tonight because we felt there was a tactical advantage for us there, and he exploited it.

“He has pace that frightens teams. He’s a great weapon for me and he is getting better all the time.

“I think people’s expectations of him are too high because they want to see him race past the full-back every time, and it’s impossible.

“If he did, the full-back would know what he was going to do, so he has to mix his game up.

“But he is one of those players that you just want to see flying down the line and obviously, he can’t do that all the time. He has to get the balance right

“I thought he did tonight, he was excellent.

“The Maritimo team I selected was a team to beat Maritimo. I expected us to win and I thought we should have won.

“I had to put a stronger team out (last night) because of the nature of the opposition, but we still managed to save Jonas Gutierrez, Demba Ba, Hatem Ben Arfa and Davide Santon.

“I keep saying the levels we have to reach in Premier League games are such that these games mean we can’t reach the eights physically.

“But we probably will on this occasion just because of the nature of the result and the fact we have got four or five bodies in the background who can come in and freshen the team up.

“But we must play with that same verve and audacity that we played with tonight.”
