Papiss Cissé and Demba Ba could face time in the international wilderness as Fifa and the African Confederation mull over what punishment to hand down to Senegal in wake of Saturday’s riot.
The Senegal manager, Ferdinand Coly, admitted there would be difficult times ahead for his country who could face a ban from competition following their fans’ behaviour that forced their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Ivory Coast to be abandoned.
Cissé and Ba both played in the game that was brought to an end after 72 minutes because of crowd trouble, but this could be their last competitive international for a while if the world football authorities throw the book at their country.
Coly: “We are going to face some difficult days but Senegal will accept the sanctions.
“For the players, it was traumatic – especially the young ones.
“We must apologise to Ivory Coast and make sure we do everything to avoid this happening again.
“I feel great sadness because this type of thing has no place on a football pitch or anywhere else.”
The Confederation of African Football, who organise the tournament, have yet to decide on any sanctions of their own.
