Former Toon midfielder Paul Bracewell says that O’Neill and Sunderland will know exactly how good they REALLY are after this Sunday’s Tyne-Wear tussle at St James' Park.
Paul Bracewell: “Sunderland are coming into the game on the back of a defeat at West Brom while Newcastle drew at home to Wolves when they would normally shut the door at 2-0.
“For Martin O’Neill this is his first derby. He will find out a lot about his players in what is a big, big game. Yes, he’s experienced the Old Firm but this is a different type of experience.
“Newcastle will obviously be closing in on a double after winning the game at the Stadium of Light, so there’s a lot at stake.
“Sometimes this fixture has been about nothing but pride at this time of the year.
“This year there’s more than just pride at stake, Sunderland can still get that high finish and Newcastle are going for fourth or fifth.
“Sunderland also have a big cup game round the corner against Everton, so there’s so much to play for.
“But there is so much to play for this time for both clubs. Both teams are flying and it’s not like one team is scaling the heights and one is struggling at the other end.
“It’s just a different experience. I played in Merseyside derbies, in the FA Cup final as well, and you tend to get Liverpool and Everton fans mixing together. They love their football in the North East and it is purely about the result.
“It doesn’t matter if you play well or not, it’s the result that counts.
“The lead-up to the game gets all of the high-profile billing and it’s just a massive event in the North East.
“The expectations are always going to be there but the last two games will have an effect.
“Both teams come into it looking for a response, and as I say at 2-0 up against Wolves you’d expect Newcastle to shut the door. For Sunderland it was their first real blip under Martin O’Neill.
“It all makes this such a tough one to call, and it will be interesting to see how Sunderland and Newcastle line up.
“Sunderland have gone with a 4-5-1 shape while Newcastle have usually gone with 4-4-2 or 4-3-3.
“I’m sure there will be personal battles all over the field.
“But usually whoever wins that midfield battle goes on to win the game.
“It’s going to be hostile out there and it will be about who keeps their cool. The last thing you want in a derby is to go down to 10 men.
“But there is always that element of edge to the game and it’s about staying on your feet."
