North-East pair given byes

Middlesbrough and Newcastle have both been given byes into the second round of the Carling Cup.[LNB] The relegated Premier League pair were set to play the first round fixture in the opening week of next season along with all the other Football League clubs.[LNB]But following the announcement that England will not be granted any further Europa League places, both clubs will go straight into the competition at the second round stage due to their status as the highest-ranked of the first-round entrants.[LNB]The Magpies went out at the third round stage last term when they lost 2-1 at home to Tottenham.[LNB]Meanwhile, Boro were also knocked out of the competition in the third round after they succumbed 3-1 to eventual winners Manchester United at Old Trafford.[LNB]
