Seven people were arrested in a pre-planned operation in the early hours of the morning and 13 during the match.
Of those detained in the pre-match operation, five were Sunderland fans arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violence disorder.
They were an 18-year-old and a 20-year-old, both from Sunderland, a 51-year-old and a 57-year-old from Easington, and a 57-year-old from Peterlee.
A 19-year-old Sunderland man was also arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. All six were bailed.
Newcastle fan Christopher Miller, 26, of Coppice Way, Shieldfield, has been charged with breaching the conditions of his football banning order, and will appear before the city’s magistrates on December 4.
Of those arrested during the match, Newcastle supporter Jamie Tenet, 31, of Elm Street, Jarrow, has been charged with being drunk and disorderly.
He will appear at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court on November 20.
Sunderland supporters Ryan Kilbey, 22, of Woodstone Village, County Durham, and John Dinsdale, 46, of Concord, Washington, have been charged with being drunk in a sports ground. They will both appear before Sunderland Magistrates on November 25.
Ten other people who were arrested have been bailed, including a 23-year-old Sunderland man from South Tyneside who will be summonsed to court for being drunk and disorderly.
A 31-year-old Houghton-le-Spring man who supports Sunderland was cautioned for possessing alcohol in a sports ground.
Two men - a 32-year-old from Hartlepool and a 24-year-old Sunderland man - were arrested on suspicion of affray. The pair, both Sunderland supporters, have been bailed until December.
Four Sunderland supporters were arrested on suspicion of going into the playing area.
They were two men from Washington, aged 21 and 24, and two men from Sunderland, aged 30 and 42.
They have all been bailed until December, as have two fans were arrested on suspicion of common assault.
They were a 20-year-old Sunderland fan from County Durham and a 27-year-old Newcastle fan from North Shields.
