The 34-year-old Butt will miss out on a reunion with his former colleagues due to a knee injury that he sustained in the 1-0 defeat at Bolton last weekend that heightened his club's relegation fears. Butt has had scans on the injury after limping off at the Reebok and although the results have still to be confirmed caretaker manager Chris Hughton has already starting making plans to cope with his vice-captain's absence "We're still awaiting the results to determine the full extent of Nicky's injury, but he won't be available against Man United," Hughton said. "That's a blow for us given we are without Danny Guthrie, Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton in that area. But hopefully Nicky won't be missing for too long." "We've got options. Geremi came in on Sunday and did well and we also have Alan Smith who is back in the frame. But we'll make a decision nearer the game." As for the identity of his captain for the visit of the Premier League leaders, Hughton added: "We'll be telling the players first but there are a few candidates." Hughton is already without Michael Owen due to an ankle injury and Irish winger Damien Duff will miss out against United due to a calf problem that kept him out at Bolton. "Damien will be not be fit in time for Man United but we should have him back for the game at Hull in 12 days' time," Hughton added. Newcastle are currently sixth from bottom of the Premier League table.
