Jermain Defoe is the latest target for Newcastle as Alan Pardew looks to step up his search for a new striker.

Toon boss Pardew will swoop for the Tottenham hitman should he fail to land No 1 target Mevlut Erdinc, according to The Sun.

The Turkish ace has been on Newcastle's radar for the last month and they hope to seal a ?7million deal for the PSG forward when the Toon return from their USA tour on Thursday.

But should Erdinc's representatives continue to drive a hard bargain, Pardew will switch his attentions to ?10m-rated Defoe.

The 28-year-old's future at Spurs is anything but certain as Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp looks to shake up his strikeforce.

Pardew said: 'I'm not going to use the word "promise", it is a dangerous word. However, I am confident we will get a striker in.

'Plenty of fans have come out to see us and mentioned on more than one occasion to me, "Where's the striker?" It is not something that is far from my mind.'

Newcastle have cash to spend following Andy Carroll's ?35m departure to Liverpool in the January transfer window.

Pardew has already run the rule over Defoe's Spurs team-mate Peter Crouch, but reportedly baulked at the ?9m asking price for the 30-year-old England forward.

The Toon ended their US tour in style with a 3-0 victory over Columbus Crew thanks to goals from Shola Ameobi, Fabricio Coloccini and Haris Vuckic.
