Newcastle v Sheff Wed preview

19 August 2009 10:27
Newcastle United will be looking to make it back-to-back Championship wins when they take on Sheffield Wednesday at St James' Park on Wednesday. The Magpies recorded an emphatic 3-0 win over Reading at the weekend courtesy of a Shola Ameobi hat-trick, and the Tyneside faithful will be eyeing more of the same. Newcastle defender Steven Taylor is in the squad for the clash despite speculation over his future. The 23-year-old, who is being linked with Liverpool, Everton and Aston Villa, is included along with midfielder Danny Guthrie, who has recovered from a hamstring problem. However, Joey Barton remains a doubt with the foot injury he suffered during Saturday's 3-0 win over Reading, although the damage is not as serious as was first feared. Loan signing Danny Simpson, who joined the club from Manchester United last week, could make his debut, but Nicky Butt (hand) is still out and Damien Duff has completed his move to Fulham. Owls team newsFrancis Jeffers is expected to return to the Wednesday squad for the trip to Newcastle. The former England striker was rested for Saturday's 1-1 draw at Peterborough owing to a knock he has been carrying, but he is set to come back into Brian Laws' thoughts at St James' Park. Laws will be without Leon Clarke and Akpo Sodje, though. Clarke has not played this season due to a hamstring strain while Sodje has also failed to appear this term due to a groin injury. They are likely to be in contention for Saturday's visit of Scunthorpe but as a result of their absence, Jermaine Johnson could again be pushed up in support of Marcus Tudgay. The Owls have drawn both of their league games so far this season, with the Peterborough game succeeding a 2-2 draw with Barnsley on the opening day.
