Newcastle v Huddersfield preview

26 August 2009 10:05
Newcastle will be hoping their positive start to the season continues when they host Huddersfield in the Carling Cup second round. The Magpies have gone unbeaten through their opening four games of the Championship campaign, while they were awarded a bye in the first round of cup competition. The Terriers have also made a bright start to the new term, standing well placed in League One, and they put paid to Stockport's cup dreams in round one. Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul is set to make his long-awaited home debut on Wednesday. The Dutchman is yet to appear for the Magpies at St James' Park since joining the club over four years ago, but will be given his chance by caretaker boss Chris Hughton against the Terriers. Krul came off the bench to make some fine saves on the opening day of the season against West Brom and will replace Steve Harper against the League One side. Midfielder Joey Barton (foot) and striker Andy Carroll (groin) missed the victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday and will remain sidelined. Teenage Slovenian attacking midfielder Haris Vuckic is included in the first-team squad for the first time since joining the club in January. Huddersfield manager Lee Clark will have a full squad to choose from for his side's daunting trip to the North East. The Terriers picked up no new injuries in Saturday's defeat to Bristol Rovers while Jim Goodwin could be set for a return to first-team action at St James' Park. The 27-year-old has yet to appear this season after undergoing knee surgery in the summer but has returned to training. Clark spent the majority of his playing career at Newcastle before becoming a member of their backroom staff and is relishing the chance to return to his former club. "It is going to be a fantastic day for myself and the staff because of the links we have with Newcastle," he said.
