Aleksander Mitrovic returns to Newcastle squad

Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic could go straight into the starting line-up for the home EFL Cup tie against Cheltenham after suspension.

Mitrovic has missed the Magpies' first four games following his red card on the final day against Tottenham last season and boss Rafa Benitez has confirmed the Serbia international will feature.

Midfielder Mohamed Diame overcame an ankle injury to start in Saturday's win at Bristol City and is available, while Benitez will make further changes.

Forward Ayoze Perez, midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and defender Grant Hanley are among those pushing for recalls after starting on the bench at the weekend.

Former Arsenal trainee Jeffrey Monakana will travel with the Cheltenham squad to St James' Park.

Free agent Monokana, who has played for Preston, Colchester and Bristol Rovers, spent time at Voluntari in the Romanian League last season and could feature if the Robins receive international clearance in time.

Winger Jonny Smith, signed on loan from Bristol City until January, has been given permission to play by his parent club.

Dan Holman (foot), Amari Morgan-Smith (knee) and Jack Munns (knee) remain out.
