Newcastle United v Stoke City LIVE

26 September 2010 17:08
Newcastle will be hoping to extend their solid start to life in the Premier League with victory over stuttering Stoke at St James' Park. Following the midweek victory over Chelsea, Chris Hughton's side can move into fifth spot if they beat Stoke who are still trying to get their season on track. Tom Bellwood brings you all the news as it happens.      [LNB] PREMIER LEAGUENewcastle 1 Stoke 2 FTFULL TIME: And that's it, Stoke's second  half double seals the three points. A war of attrition at times, a game of very few chances was decided by an own goal in the end. Stoke move up to eighth, Newcastle remain in tenth place. Thanks for joining me. [LNB]95min: What a chance for Newcastle! James Perch shoots from the edge of the box, the ball is redirected by Robert Huth and the ball bounces agonisingly wide.[LNB]94min: Matthew Etherington does well to run down the clock - jinking past Newcastle players and then chasing the ball down when he lost it. [LNB]90min: What a chance to level the score, wasted by Kevin Nolan. Gutierrez bombs down the left wing, cuts inside and found Nolan on the penalty spot but he guided his shot wide of the upright. Real chance. [LNB]89min: Jones thumps over from great distance but then a huge roar goes up as the fourth official announces there will be a minimum of six minutes added on.[LNB]85min: (OWN) GOAL! JAMES PERCH heads into his own net to hand Stoke the lead with just a few minutes left. Delap's throw in was heads away for a corner, which was swung into the near post and Perch craned his neck and directed the ball into the roof of the net. Cracking finish, mind. [LNB]80min: Rory Delap booms in a couple of long throws, and Newcastle reply by lumping in some industrial long balls themselves. Still waiting for either keeper to have to make a save, though. [LNB]78min: After a rather subdued half hour or so, the Geordie fans are full of voice again. Their team are now well on top but they can't quite find an opening to make Sorensen work. [LNB]74min: Change for Newcastle: Cheik Tiote is replaced by midweek goal hero Shola Ameobi. [LNB]72min: We hear that Fuller has been taken straight to hospital following his earlier injury. Stoke staff believe he has dislocated his shoulder. Ouch, etc. [LNB]70min: The goal has stung Newcastle into action. Pouring forward now, Carroll latched onto Gutierrez's cross, Sorensen spilled the shot but recovered just before Nolan had the chance to steal. [LNB]67min: GOAL! KENWYNE JONES nods home from a couple of yards to bring Stoke on terms. Free kick delivered to the back post was nodded back across the six yard area to Jones who had the simplest of tasks to head home. [LNB] Third time lucky: After striking the post twice Jones finally finds the back of the net[LNB]66min: Ricardo Fuller goes down under an innocuous challenge and has to be helped off the pitch. Looks like he's dislocated his shoulder just a few minutes after coming on. [LNB]63min: Off the post... again! Delightful free kick, floated to the back post and Jones thumped his header off the crossbar. They're getting closer...[LNB]61min: First change for the hosts: Hatem Ben Arfa (who has been excellent) is replaced by Jonas Gutierrez. [LNB]58min: Off the post! Kenwyne Jones leaps and smacks his header off the upright. The ball falls to Fuller who you expect to score but he dragged his shot wide with Williamson blocking his path. Better from the visitors. [LNB]56min: Second change for Stoke: Glen Whelan is replaced by Rory Delap.  Seems Tony Pulis has conceded he got it wrong with the changes he made for this game and returned to the system  the team have been using all season. [LNB] Heads above: Kenwyne Jones has hit the cross bar twice in the second half[LNB]53min: Stoke win a corner but it's headed tamely wide at the back post by Ryan Shawcross who runs away berating himself. Rory Delap is stripping off his tracksuit, readying himself for action. [LNB]50min: Early change in the half for Stoke: Salif Diao is replaced by Ricardo Fuller. [LNB]48min: Joey Barton plays a scything ball through the Stoke defence. Routledge scampers after it. only problem is he started his run when he was about five yards offside. [LNB]46min: We're back off and running. No change for either side...[LNB]SECOND HALF...  HALF TIME: It hasn't been a classic encounter but Newcastle are good for their lead. A rash decision by Huth led to the penalty late in the half which means Stoke trail at the break. More in a bit. [LNB]45min: We'll have two minutes added on.[LNB] King Kev: Nolan's effort from the penalty spot hands Newcastle the lead[LNB][LNB][LNB]42min: GOAL KEVIN NOLAN sends Thomas Sorensen the wrong way to hand Newcastle the lead. They haven't completely dominated but they are worthy of the lead. Great time to score, too. [LNB]41min: PENALTY TO NEWCASTLE! Huth wipes Carroll out in the box - a ridiculous challenge as a flighted ball entered the box. Kevin Nolan stands over it...[LNB]40min: So far we've seen three shots at goal but not a single on target. Yawn, etc. [LNB]39min: Andy Gray confirms what we were all thinking anyway. 'This game is certainly the worst of the three games today. Certainly the least entertaining'. [LNB]37min: Huth concedes a free kick in another dangerous position. Jose Enrique takes it and his effort is that bad I refuse to describe it to you. [LNB] Slow start: The clash at St James' Park hasn't sparked to life yet[LNB]34min: .... Barton slams the free kick straight into the wall. Ho hum, etc...[LNB] 33min: Nolan is felled 25 yards out and the hosts have a free kick in a very decent position... Barton and Coloccini stand over it. [LNB]30min: Half an hour gone and Stoke are yet to have an effort on goal. This is an entertaining game but falling well short of the 'classic' bracket. [LNB]27min: And now Jones has a face injury which calls a halt to the game for a few moments. [LNB]25min: Hooooray! Jones has a very ambitious dig from 25 yards which is goes high and wide. Andy Gray describes the effort as 'poor'. The Geordie fans really enjoyed it, however. [LNB] Park battle: Perch holds off Etherington's challenge[LNB]23min: This really hasn't been Stoke's game so far. They've had none of the possession as Newcastle play neat football on the deck. Every time they do get the ball, Tony Pulis's side are lumping it long to Kenwyne Jones who is roundly booed for his Sunderland connection. [LNB]9min: OOOH! The noise at St James' Park rises a notch as Jose Enrique fizzes a low cross through the six yard area. Unfortunately for Newcastle no one took a gamble on that ball being played and the chance is lost. [LNB]16min: Stoke win a throw in high up the pitchand there's a brief moment where the players stop and look around forRory Delap. But he's warming a sdeat on the bench and can't getinvolved. Suffice to say Stoke didn't score! [LNB]14min: Lots and lots of passing from Newcastle but very little penetration so far. [LNB] Handy Andy: Carroll rises in the box to send a header goalwards[LNB]9min: First piece of real action for Tim Krul who makes his league debut for Newcastle. Colocinni's touch sends the ball spinning out for what looks like will be a corner but Krul slides across to keep the ball in. Neatly done. [LNB]8min: Tiote and Barton play keep-ball in midfield for a bit and the Geordie fans are on their feet claiming a corner which is waved away. [LNB]4min: No great goalmouth action to speak of as yet but Thomas Sorensen has made a shocking start to the season. Twice now he has tried to clear has lines but only succeeded in slicing his clearance horribly out for a throw in. [LNB]1min: Hurrah, we're off and running at St James' Park. [LNB]FIRST HALF... 4.10pm: Players move toward the centre circle, think we might have some footie in a moment. [LNB]4.09pm: What's going on? Why hasn't the game got under way? [LNB]4.05pm: Shouldn't we have kicked off by now? [LNB]4pm: Players start to appear in the tunnel, well Stoke players do. The hosts are playing it cool. [LNB]3.50: Do my eyes deceive me? Rory Delap only a sub? Yes, it's true. As is the man who scored the most goals away from home last season for Stoke - Ricardo Fuller.
