The midfielder has been a thorn in the side of the Newcastle United hierarchy in recent weeks, making comments on Twitter that hinted at behind-the-scenes unrest at the club.

The matter has been an unwanted distraction for Newcastle ahead of the new season, and Pardew, following consultation with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, revealed letters have been now sent to Newcastle's players reminding them of their responsibilities.

"Now the problem I have with this new medium of Twitter, people are Twittering on there in an emotional state. Not just footballers," Pardew said.

"Sportsmen are an emotive people, that's why they become pro sportsmen. They get in an emotional state and then you put something out instantly on Twitter, it's very, very damaging.

"Not only to a football club but to any organisation and it could be to the police too which I've seen on occasion.
