Kevin Nolan ensured Lee Clark's return to Tyneside ended in misery as he struck a late goal to give Newcastle a Carling Cup victory over League One Huddersfield. Danny Guthrie had put Newcastle ahead in the 35th minute when he accepted Joe Skarz's poor pass to beat Alex Smithies from 20 yards. The League One side went ahead two minutes later when Robinson coolly beat Krul from the penalty spot after the Dutchman had brought him down. A famous cup upset was on the cards two minutes after the break when Jordan Rhodes doubled the visitors' lead, but their defence left Geremi unmarked in the penalty area. Huddersfield's back line was caught out again when Shola Ameobi was upended by Andy Butler inside the box and the striker duly converted the penalty. Nolan sealed the win when he volleyed from close range after Ameobi nodded across the goalmouth in the 84th minute.
