Newcastle's Under-21's suffered a home defeat to Manchester United last night.

Manchester United’s U21s moved up to second in the league after a win on Tyneside.

But all the early chances came from Newcastle, and they were unfortunate to go into the break at 0-0.

So much so, Man Utd didn't have a single shot on target in the first 45 minutes.

The second half began with a counter attack from the visitors and Adnan Januzaj sent a corner in which was headed home by captain Tom Thorpe.

Newcastle pressed for an equaliser and after 60 minutes they managed to draw level.

They won a free kick just outside out penalty area after an innocuous looking challenge from substitute Tom Lawrence.

The free kick was curled in to the near post only for young keeper Sutherland to spill the ball, allowing Conor Newton to slam home from close range.

It wasn’t a lead that lasted for long. Only five minutes later, another corner taken by Januzaj’s was knocked down to Michele Fornasier, who played it across the six yard box for Lawrence to finish from close range.

A defeat because of poor marking on dead-ball kicks.
