Newcastle's hopes of staging World Cup football will this week receive their first examination. The inspection team for England's bid to stage the 2018 or 2022 finals was due on Tyneside to assess Newcastle-Gateshead's suitability to be considered as one of the venues. During the visit the inspectors are scheduled to evaluate the accommodation, media landscape and infrastructure, potential fan parks and the suitability of St James' Park. The bid was formally launched last week with Newcastle-Gateshead and neighbouring Sunderland among 15 cities hoping to be chosen as hosts should the Football Association be awarded the tournament.
