With only £58,000,000 spent in The British Transfer Market last January – it is fair to say that compared to the summer window, top flight managers are much more reluctant to spend. That said – with such success stories like Papiss Cisse and Nikica Jelavic people may wonder why managers do not spend? Of course, the likes of big spenders Manchester City and Chelsea are in the latter stages of assmebling their squads to challenge domestically and on the continent.
In this article – I will look at transfer rumours surrounding teams in The Barclays Premier League. The potential comings and goings and reasons behind the move.
Another Ivorian at St James' Park will be wonderful news to the Newcastle faithful. The £16,000,000 rated forward Seydou Doumbia could be on his way to Newcastle this January as ANOTHER possible replacement for Demba Ba. Although Padrew would prefer Doumbia to play with Ba and Cisse, the likelyhood of club owner Mike Ashley handing over that kind of money is preposterous. If Demba Ba leaves in January due to his wages and left wing conundrum – the sale could bring in funds for Doumbia, who scored 26 goals for Russian Club CSKA Moscow last season.
Having had an impressive EURO 2012 – Debuchy was linked with a move to Newcastle to join up with French internation team mates, Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa. His current club though, Lille, have already rejected two bids from Newcastle for there right back – but has promised Debuchy that if they fail to make The Champions League, he will be allowed to go. Padrew is still after his man – to fill in at right back for his side. He said: “I am pretty happy with the squad. But if we do go into the markey again – it will for just one player.”
Since his £35,000,000 to Liverpool – Carroll has yet to rediscover the form he showed at Newcastle. Carroll was scoring goals for fun in the North East – but since his move to Merseyside, and the introduction of Brendan Rodgers, Carroll has failed to live up to his price tag – and has been loaned to West Ham. Newcastle where also linked with the Geordie, and a return home may be appealing to Carroll – although he may struggle getting back into the side ahead of Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse. January could be a big month for Carroll – he may return to Liverpool, stay at West Ham or move back to Newcastle.
Although linked with a move to Manchester United – Tom Ince may see himself getting more playing time up at Newcastle. Padrew has been rumoured to already have had a bid rejected by Blackpool at around £4,000,000. Ince's contract at Blackpool runs out in 2013 – and the young start seems destined for Barclays Premier League Football. Either with Blackpool via promotion or with Newcastle, or Manchester United, if either club sign the young, goal scoring winger in January. Padrew seemed to spend the summer window preventing his big name players from leaving the club – now that January is amongst us, he will be eager to cement his teams position in the league with signing young players.
Charlie Austin is currently the top scorer in the country after netting 15 goals in 12 games for Championship side Burnley. Austin's performances have firmly established him as one of the leading goal scorers in the coutnry outside the Barlcays Premier League – and Magpies boss Alan Padrew is thought to be a long term admirer of Austin. Another player who has been linked to Newcastle due to the uncertainty of Demba Ba. Austin is young – and would be a gamble for Newcastle. Yet with 15 goals already this season, playing for Burnely – Austin may be worth the gamble.
Alot has been made of Demba Ba and his release clause as of late. As well as the fact he is playing out of position AND wants a wage increase. A lot, I know. Well, his realease cause of £7,500,000 has ran out now so Newcastle have some security when it comes to keeping there star man. However, since the arrival of Papiss Cisse, Ba had been moved to the left wing in a 3 man attack. His goal scoring dried up upon Cisse's arrival and Ba wants to play down the centre. Ba is on only £50,000 a week at Newcastle – for a player who is more than capable of scoring 20 goals a season in The Barclays Premier League – Newcastle have done well. However if they are too keep there man and end this specualation once and for all, they will have to a lot to make Demba Ba a happy Newcastle player again.
Tim Krul has been linked with a move to Barcelona to become Victor Valdes' deputy in goal. However, Krul is unlikely to be unsettled by these rumours, as the Dutch internatioanl values the chances of being Holland first choice goalkeeper too much to settle for a substitute role at the Camp Nou. Barcelona's current reserve keeper is Jose Pinto, 36. The veteran's contract runs out this summer and coach Vilanova has issued his scouts too find him the best young goalkeeper out there. At 24, Krul certainly falls into this category – it all depends if he wants to go from a Barlcays Premier League number one to a bench-warmer. Krul came through Newcastles youth-system, and after claiming the number one shirt from Steve Harper – he will be keen to hold on to it for years to come.
Davide Santon could be on his way back to Italy after one season at Newcastle – with Lazio leading the chase. Dubbed the “future of Italian football” by none other than Jose Mourinho – it came to a surprise than Santon moved to Newcastle. Brought in as a replacement for Jose Enrique – Santon's first season was blighted with injuries, although did go on to make 19 competitive appearances. He instantly became a hit with Newcastle fans when he admitted he'd “never seen a Mackem in Milan”. Santon has definitly been a player that improved as the season went on – and at just the age of 21 Newcastle should give the youngster some more time to settle in.
The French international signed from Lille – has been linked with clubs all around Europe because of his displays for Newcastle. Linked with Barcelona, Manchester United and Arsenal. Padrew will be glad he was able to keep the Frenchman at St James' Park in the Summer, and will look to do it again come January. Newcastle rejected an Arsenal bid late last summer in an attempt to try and keep their midfield maestro, who has built an impressive partnership with midfield enforcer Cheik Tiote. Arsenal are considering to go in again for the Frenchman, with a £20,000,000 bid for him. Cabaye has always been subject of a bid from Barcelona – who offered Newcastle just £8,000,000. A price Padrew described as “laughable”. Cabaye will be a fan of the French surroundings at The Emirates – and with his passing ability for all too see, he would fit well in the Arsenal system.
With his contract set to expire in the summer, and the signing of Mathieu Debuchy, the ex-Manchester United right back may be on his way out of Newcastle. He is rumoured to be after an increase in his £15,000 a week salary to £30,000 – but managing directors at Newcastle are not quite on the same level as Simpson. With a change of agents, and already turning down several offers from Newcastle it seems Simpson is on his way out of Newcsatle. He will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement in January. Spanish side Espanyol have been linked with the Newcastle right back – if he fancies a move to Spain.
