Newcastle have signed Zurab Khizanishvili, the Georgia international defender, on a three-month loan deal from Blackburn Rovers. Chris Hughton, the Newcastle interim manager, moved to sign the centre half after the club suffered their first defeat of the season at Blackpool last night. Khizanishvili, 27, will go straight into the squad for the Coca-Cola Championship match against Plymouth Argyle at St James’ Park on Saturday. “Zurab is an experienced defender and we’re very pleased to get him on board,” Hughton said. “He knows English football very well and will be a valuable addition to the squad.” Khizanishvili, who has 62 international caps, spent three years at Blackburn having signed for £500,000 from Rangers. He played for them only once this season, in a 3-1 Carling Cup second-round victory at Gillingham. He started his career at his hometown club of Dinamo Tbilisi and left Georgia in 2001 for Dundee, where he spent two seasons.
