Newcastle set to secure Dutch international

Newcastle United are set to make their first signing of the summer by snapping up PSV Eindhoven captain Georginio Wijnaldum for £15 million, according to the Telegraph.

Wijnaldum was left out of PSV's pre-season squad in anticipation of a move away and Newcastle are favourites to secure his signature.

Steve McClaren, who was only appointed as Newcastle head coach last month, has been vocal about his frustration about the Magpies lack of progression in the transfer market and as had to reassure fans on more than one occasion that new signings are on there way.

The attacking midfielder scored 18 times and bagged three for PSV last season and was a vital part in them clutching the Eredivisie title last year. He is one of the top prospects in his position in Europe but the Dutch champions accept that Wijnaldum wants to move to one of Europe's top leagues.

Wijnaldum, who has been capped by Holland 19 times, is also thought to be a target for Newcastle's north-east rivals Sunderland but McLaren is said to be a long time admirer of the Dutch international since his time managing FC Twente and determined to not that him slip away.

Newcastle are also thought to be in on going talks with Queens Park Rangers to sign their striker Charlie Austin but are unwilling to meet the Championship clubs £15 million valuation of the England international. The Tyneside club are winning to pay up to £12 million for Austin.
