Newcastle must hands reins to Shearer, insists departing star Owen

Michael Owen insists Alan Shearer must be appointed the next manager of Newcastle United. Owen will quit Newcastle when his four-year £105,000-a-week contract expires next week, even in the unlikely event of the club's sale to new investors and if Shearer's subsequent coronation is pushed through quickly. Shearer's appointment as caretaker hardly inspired Owen, who failed to score in his former strike partner's eight games in charge. He was even dropped for his return to Anfield as he was unable to lift Newcastle out of the bottom three. But the former England striker, whose alternative options are currently limited to Hull City, says Shearer is the only man for the rebuilding job at St James's Park, because he understands the club, and he is potentially a `top manager'. Owen said: `I'd like to think Alan will be given the job. He's obviously a new manager learning his trade, and he's got to start somewhere, but the indications I saw were that he's going to be a top manager in years to come. 'Obviously, he's Newcastle through and through, and that's important to the people of Newcastle. 'It's a club that not many people understand, I would suggest, buthe understands it, and he's certainly got the right credentials. Idon't see any reason why he shouldn't be given the manager's job.'
