Ryan Taylor's stunning volley eased Newcastle into second place in the Barclays Premier League ahead of the rest of the weekend's action after a hard-fought victory over Everton.
John Heitinga's 12th-minute own goal had given the home side the lead, but Taylor extended it in style 17 minutes later when his dipping shot went in off the underside of the crossbar.
Jack Rodwell pulled one back for the visitors in first-half injury time, but despite a concerted second-half assault, Everton were unable to rescue a point.
