Newcastle fans resolutely unimpressed by record profits

Newcastle today posted a record profit of £18.7 million – a cause for celebration, yes?

No. So much no. For many fans, it’s another stick with which to beat the club’s unpopular owner, Mike Ashley.

Fans remain unhappy that the club seem uninterested in signing new players, and with the apparent lack of ambition, with the Magpies seemingly content to finish mid-table every year.

So against this background, the profit for the club – who remain £129 million in debt to Ashley – doesn’t seem like much to shout about.

It was, though, a great opportunity for fans to flex their sarcasm muscles.

A statement from Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley said: “The club benefits from a supportive owner and is financially stable. This gives us a strong platform from which to grow, both on and off the pitch, a result of which means, as we move forward, we are able to net spend on the playing squad and invest in other areas of the business.”

Newcastle fans see things differently though.
