Newcastle fans buy 25,000 season tickets despite relegation disaster

Newcastle United have already sold an incredible 25,000 season tickets despite having no permanent manager, no new signings, no new buyer and the prospect of a trip to Scunthorpe instead of Old Trafford in three month's time. The blind faith of the Toon supporters never fails to amaze, and with 26 days to go until their first home Championship game - against Reading - there is still time for that figure to easily push to 30,000. Last season, despite three managers and a forever lasting relegation dogfight, the average St James' attendance exceeded 48,000, and so, with Newcastle likely to attract big away crowds this season, it is unlikely the ground will ever look sparse. The club released its season ticket figures on Monday to fend off reports of a massive downturn. But there was no news on the sale of Newcastle United, with managing director Derek Llambias simply saying: 'We are trying hard. There is serious interest and it's a case of first past the post.'
