Newcastle manager Chris Hughton is considering handing Swindon's Charlie Austin a fairytale switch to the Premier League.

Hughton sent scouts to check on Austin in Swindon's 1-1 draw with Exeter on Monday. The 20-year-old has scored 18 goals since being snapped up from non-League Poole in October, catching Hughton's attention as he looks to make the most of a relatively lightweight transfer kitty of just £15million in the summer.

Hughton is willing to gamble on some up-and-coming stars in an attempt to add quality to his squad.

Going up? Austin is chasing promotion to the Championship with Swindon - but could be thrust into the Premier League

Austin began his career in Reading's youth set-up before dropping into non-League football and working as a builder for his father.

But his remarkable run of goals since arriving at Swindon has fired Danny Wilson's men into the fight for promotion to the Coca-Cola Championship.
