Premier league side Newcastle are closing in on the signature of Freiburg striker Papiss Cisse, according to German sports agency SID.

The Senegalese international left his country's training camp Tuesday ahead of the African Cup of Nations to enter talks with Newcastle over a move to the northeast of England.

Should the transfer go through the 26-year-old would be reunited with international strike partner Demba Ba, but Cisse must first pass a medical before the reported 12million euro move can be finalised.

Freiburg, the Bundesliga's basement club, rejected an offer from the Magpies for Cisse in August, prompting the striker to express his desire to leave the German outfit.

"I will play in the Premier League one day. I want to make a name for myself like my friend Demba Ba has done," declared Cisse, referring to his compatriot Ba who has enjoyed a rich vein of form since joining Newcastle in the summer.

Cisse, who joined Freiburg in May 2010, has scored nine goals in 17 league starts this season.
