Montpellier's French international defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa could be on his way to the English Premier League after struggling Newcastle tabled an eight million euro bid.

A source close to the French club said on Sunday that the 23-year-old defender was being lined up for a three-and-a-half year contract at St James's Park, where he would join compatriots Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa and newly-signed Mathieu Debuchy.

Capped three times, Yanga-Mbiwa, was the subject of interest from Arsenal and AC Milan last summer, but Montpellier chairman Louis Nicollin vetoed a move as he wanted to keep the framework of last season's championship-winning side together for their Champions League campaign.

But with Montpellier out of the running for the title and their European adventure over, the club could be ready to listen to offers, even though Yanga-Mbiwa is under contract until 2015.
